After what seems like an endless offseason, baseball is about to return as teams in Gulf Coast League begin their preseason activities. The schedules have been announced and everyone has a clean slate. Fans, executives, coaches and players are eagerly awaiting the start of the 2010 season.

 | Monday, September 21st, 2009: Issmael Salas Nabs Best Bat Trophy
One of the Gulf Coast League's most prestigious honors is the GCL MVP. When all the votes were counted, the 2009 recipient was the talented second baseman of the GCL (STL) Cardinals, Issmael Salas.
He starred this season with a .408 batting average, 31 hits, 1 home run, 11 RBIs, .494 OBP and 23 runs scored.
For being named the GCL's top hitter, Salas will be honored at the SION Baseball Writers awards banquet this weekend.

 | Sunday, September 20th, 2009: GCL (CIN)'s León Nets GCL GCL Pitcher of the Year
This season when the GCL (CIN) manager wrote the name "León" on the lineup card, he was pretty confident that he would get a good start out of him.
Outing after outing Orlando León took command and usually got the win. He dominated with a 4-1 mark and a 2.52 ERA in 5 starts, piling up 35.2 innings and 14 strikeouts and holding other ballclubs to a .284 batting average.
For his superb performance León was named the GCL GCL Pitcher of the Year winner by the baseball writers.
All of the award-winning players will be honored this weekend at the SBWA annual awards dinner.
